Vehicle entry permit rule at Causeway put off

PETALING JAYA: The government has decided to delay implementation of the vehicle entry permit (VEP), Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai announced today, Star Online reported.
The VEP was set to start in January next year.
Liow said the system had been delayed to “fine-tune the system”.
He said the government wanted to ensure everything was in place before introducing the VEP at both the Singapore and Thai borders.
The news portal quoted Liow as saying there was no point starting the system at the Johor-Singapore border first and not the Padang Besar-Thailand border.
“Once the system is in place, we will implement VEP at both borders simultaneously,” the minister said after attending an MCA gathering in Kluang today.
The VEP was to be imposed on top of the RM20 for the Road Charge (RC).
The RC costs RM20 per entry per vehicle. It was implemented at the Johor Causeway and the Second Link Crossing in Tanjung Kupang, Gelang Patah, in November 2016.
The VEP was expected to cost RM25 and would be valid for five years.
The VEP and RC were also expected earlier to be implemented at border entries with Brunei and Kalimantan.
The VEP, using a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag, was to help the government identify the number of foreign vehicles entering Malaysia.
It was also reported to prevent car theft and car cloning syndicates. -FMT
