Zahid: Hope for multi-cornered fights, but beware the risks

UMNO AGM | As Umno prepares for the upcoming 14th general election, the party’s de facto deputy president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party should hope for multi-cornered fights.
Such a scenario would split opposition votes, he added, and typically benefits the ruling government.
Nevertheless, Zahid warned that this may not always work out in Umno's favour.
"Let us hope for the contests be more than two-cornered (fights), but we must look at the risks for some seats.

"In some seats, multi-cornered fights will not benefit us," he said at the closing of the Umno general assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur today.
As such, he stressed, the party should focus on strengthening itself from within, and not rely solely on external factors.
The next general election is expected to feature multiple three-cornered fights between BN, Pakatan Harapan, and third force parties such as PAS and PSM.
Zahid also warned that the opposition is known to spring last-minute surprise attacks, which may be able to win over those on the fence.
Meanwhile, the deputy prime minister said any seat disagreements between BN component parties would be resolved via a conflict resolution committee (CRC).
He ended his speech with a fiery oath, urging Umno members to respect the top leadership and be obedient.
Zahid himself vowed that he would remain loyal to Najib as long as he was alive.
"There may be thunder and lightning but my spirit will not fade. We should not leave our president alone," he said.
Calling the delegates present to stand, Zahid led them in reciting the oath, which calls upon Umno members to remain loyal to Najib and the top party leadership.
"We will give an all-out fight and we will obey the president," said Zahid.- Mkini
