Najib denies hand in ensuring ‘no-contest’ for Umno president post

UMNO AGM | Umno president Najib Abdul Razak has denied that he had a hand in ensuring that there will be no contest against him for the president's post in the next party election.
Najib, in his closing speech at the Umno annual general assembly today, admitted that although he had heard that a motion on the matter would be tabled in the general assembly, he did not want to get involved .
"A supreme council member who is really close to me wanted to bring this matter up, but I didn't discuss it with him until he brought it up during the Wanita, Pemuda and Puteri Umno general assemblies, suggesting that the president and deputy president's posts should not be contested.

“I didn't want to get involved in it because I have an interest in deciding the outcome, and I believe the decision must be made without me hinting it, without me whispering it.
"I wanted the supreme council to agree to the motion whole-heartedly and willingly," he said.
Najib added that he even insisted on the party focusing on the general election instead.
However, the matter was brought up during a supreme council meeting, before it was decided that the matter be brought up during the general assembly.
Even then, he insisted that the matter should not be a supreme council motion, but should instead come from the delegates.

"That's why it was decided that the motion be proposed by the Youth wing with amendments that the posts of president and deputy president should not contested.
"As such, in the name of Allah, I, together with (Umno acting deputy president) Ahmad Zahid Hamidi promise to shoulder this important duty," he said.
Umno had unanimously adopted the motion for the party president and deputy president's posts to be uncontested in the party polls.
Zahid, who is currently carrying out the duties of the deputy president, had said that this would ensure that Umno will be able to focus on winning the upcoming general election.- Mkini
