KUALA LUMPUR: Umno president Najib Razak has made repeated calls for Umno leaders and spokespersons to not “shoot themselves in the foot”, said acting Umno deputy president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Briefing delegates who had been selected to speak at the Umno General Assembly 2017, Zahid said: “As the 14th general election approaches, let us not shoot ourselves in the foot. The PM has advised us many times about this.
“We should talk based on facts because we are watched by journalists who are present, whether print or online.”
He told the delegates at the Putra World Trade Centre that “82% of what we speak about will be covered by online media, so be careful as they do not report what we speak about but only the mistakes we make.
“Always remember that the number of people who like or support us is similar to the number of people that are against us. Do not make mistakes.
“Delegates, when making speeches or tabling motions, must do so with substance and a sense of newsworthiness. They must have proper presentation, be able to read the body language of their audience and be able to summarise.”
The opposition was constantly watching Umno in order to pounce on any mistakes made, he reminded the delegates present.
“Our audience is not just Umno members but the opposition who are watching so they can point out mistakes.
“Sometimes a delegate might suggest something that is nice to hear and nice to utter but could be a sensitive issue to other races or religions.”
Zahid urged delegates from Terengganu, Kelantan and Perak to talk about the floods in order to gain more support.
“Please go tell the flood victims that we are sympathetic towards their struggles. Use smart words to show you understand them.” -FMT
