Anwar: Dr M 'very proud' of my victory in Port Dickson

PD POLLS | Newly elected Port Dickson MP Anwar Ibrahim says he has already informed Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad about his win in today’s by-election, and that the latter is “very proud” of the outcome.
“I just phoned Mahathir to inform him, and he feels very proud of the results,” he told reporters at the Pakatan Harapan election operations room.
Anwar had just arrived from the tallying centre at the Port Dickson Municipal Council where his landslide victory – by 23,560 votes – was officially announced by the Election Commission.
He also thanked Mahathir and other Pakatan Harapan leaders for endorsing his candidacy in Port Dickson.
Last Monday, the prime minister made a rare by-election campaign trail appearance, speaking alongside Anwar at a mega ceramah in the constituency.
Anwar also extended his thanks to Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin for coming down to campaign for him.
“I must mention Muhyiddin specifically, who took the trouble to come and campaign despite his health problems,” he said.
Anwar said that the commanding majority garnered in this by-election – which eclipsed the 17,710-vote majority obtained in the 14th general election, despite the lower turnout – is an important milestone for the Pakatan Harapan government, as it reaffirmed the people’s confidence in the coalition.
His swearing-in ceremony will be held next Monday when Parliament reconvenes.
“I will then focus on my work assisting our leaders in Parliament to ensure we embark on all effective parliamentary reforms,” he said.
Diverse support
Thanking the voters of Port Dickson, Anwar said he was humbled by the diverse support he received.
“We have achieved a remarkable 70 percent of the popular vote. What is astounding to me is that we have managed to garner favourable support from all ethnic groups.
“The Malays gave me a commanding lead, giving an endorsement to Harapan. The Chinese and the Indians and even the small numbers of Orang Asli communities gave their total endorsement.
"I must express my profound appreciation," he said.
In GE14, Harapan's vote share stood at 59 percent.
Anwar also thanked the armed forces for their increased support from the last general election. -Mkini
