Cyberjaya, Putrajaya to be testbeds for 5G network trials

KUALA LUMPUR: Minister of Communications and Multimedia Gobind Singh Deo says 5G network testbeds will be in Cyberjaya and Putrajaya by November.
He added that these locations were chosen for the trials because they had fibre-ready networks.
He said: “By November, for a period of one year, telcos, vendors, researchers, startups and technology adopters will be invited to carry out 5G trials… to explore the practical uses and modes of implementation.”
He also said the MCMC would lead the 5G trials by setting up a taskforce which would include the local governments of Cyberjaya and Putrajaya.
Meanwhile, Gobind assured that by 2023, there would be a minimum 98% baseline broadband coverage in populated areas with a minimum speed of 30 mbps.
He added that gigabit-speed internet services would be made available at selected high-impact and strategic industrial areas by 2020 and all state capitals by 2023.
The National Fiberisation and Connectivity Plan (NFCP) under the ministry will also be phasing out copper networks by 2023, as copper wires are not enough to fulfill current and future network requirements.
He said: “By 2022, we envisage that 70% of all schools, government offices, clinics, hospitals, police stations and fire stations will be served by fibre networks.”
Gobind said these were in line with his plan to make Malaysia a “digital government” with improvements in digital economy and technology.
He said investment in digital technology was important if the nation wished to remain competitive. -FMT
