DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang has urged the government to give thought as to how the cases of several mysterious deaths can be resolved.
He said this should include the reopening of investigations and the establishment of special inquiries.
According to him, a certain murder trial had reminded Malaysians that the country was notorious in the world for several unresolved and mysterious deaths.
“These mysterious deaths would include mysterious deaths linked to the investigation of 1MDB, such as the murder of AmBank founder and banker Hussain Najadi, the mysterious death of deputy public prosecutor Kevin Morais, the murder of Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu and the death of DAP political aide Teoh Beng Hock,” he added in a statement this afternoon.
Interest in Morais’ murder trial was reignited after one of the accused told the court that he was offered RM3.5 million to plead guilty by former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak through a prisons officer.
In response to this, Najib accused national news service Bernama of reporting the matter with a mischievous, sensational and tabloidish headline.
He also claimed that the accused, S Ravi Chandaran, should name the prisons officer or face perjury proceedings if he couldn’t.
Morais was abducted on Sept 4, 2015 and later found dead in a concrete-filled oil drum. Seven individuals currently face trial over his death.
As for the murder of Altantuya and Hussain in 2007 and 2013 respectively, the courts had sentenced the killers but did not manage to establish a motive.
Teoh died in 2009 after being interrogated by the Selangor MACC. Although a Royal Commission of Inquiry had ruled that he committed suicide, Teoh’s family remain unconvinced.
