Flood warning issued for 10 areas in Klang ahead of high tide phenomena

KLANG: A combination of thunderstorms and heavy downpour over the next few days could lead to flooding in 10 high-risk areas in the district.
This coincides with the high tide phenomena, which is expected to strike the coast of Selangor from Tuesday (Oct 9).
The high tide phenomena between Oct 9 and Oct 12, is expected to reach its peak height of 5.6m on Oct 11.
Klang district officer Mohd Zainal Mohd Nor said four of the high-risk areas are Kapar, namely Pengkalan Tok Muda; Sementa; the fisherman jetty at Kampung Perapat and Sungai Keramat.
."The rest are Jalan Pandamaran, Taman Selat Damai, North Port, Port Klang, Pulau Ketam and Teluk Gong, he said.
Zainal, who is also the chairman of the District Disaster Management Committee, said eight evacuation centres had been identified to provide temporary shelter to flood victims if the need arises.
He said the centres were located at Kampung Tok Muda multipurpose hall, Sekolah Rendah Agama Sementa, Sekolah Rendah Agama Batu 4 Kapar, multipurpose hall at Jalan Palembang Rantau Panjang, Dewan Dato Ahmad Razali at Batu 4 Kapar, multipurpose hall Bandar Sultan Sulaiman in North Port, Pandamaran Sports Complex and SJKC Lee Min Teluk Gong.
"Residents from the high-risk areas are advised to be on alert and take necessary precautions.
"They should quickly usher their families to the nearby evacuation centres in the event of a flood," he said
Mohd Zainal said they were closely working with the relevant agencies including the Selangor Department of Drainage (DID), Fire and Rescue Services Department and the police.
He said more than 100 personnel from various agencies have been put on standby to face the situation.
"The personnel will be mobilised from 5am daily and the tide is expected to rise from 6.05am," he said after making a visit to inspect the condition of several bunds around the Kapar area on Monday (Oct 8).
State DID director Azmi Ibrahim, who had accompanied Zainal during the visit, said a bund at Kampung Sungai Keramat at Batu 5 in Kapar had also been repaired as part of the preparations for the high tide phenomena.
He said the width of the bund had shrunk by a metre from its original size of 3m.
"The soil on the seafront of the bund eroded and we have rectified the problem," he said.
Besides that, Azmi said they also had several excavators and 20 mobile pumps with them as part of their resources in preparation of the high tide phenomena.- Star
