Government servants shouldn’t abuse power, says Anwar

PORT DICKSON: PKR’s Port Dickson candidate Anwar Ibrahim last night warned against abuse of power by government servants, reiterating his pledge for a clean and fair by-election without assistance from government machinery.
“When I was the deputy prime minister and I wanted to register my daughter for school, I didn’t use a government vehicle.
“I brought my own car. But my escorts wanted to follow anyway and I couldn’t refuse. So I remind those in the government now (not to abuse their power as ministers),” Anwar told a crowd of about 150 at Teluk Kemang.
He said when his daughter, Nurul Izzah Anwar, was offered a scholarship, he had declined it saying he wanted to pay.
“Although Izzah had good marks and qualified for the scholarship, I felt that there were other students who might not get to further their studies simply because they don’t have money.
“I couldn’t bear to take the scholarship for Izzah because that would mean depriving another person who really couldn’t afford to send their children for further studies.”
He also gave the example of his wife, Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who had attended several of his ceramahs in Port Dickson.
“That is why this time around, even when she was here, she did not announce projects. We want to have a clean and fair by-election.”
The by-election on Oct 13 will be contested by six others including former Umno leader Isa Samad and Anwar’s former political aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan. - FMT
