PORT DICKSON: Pakatan Harapan is now banking on a “second wave” of voters in order to achieve the 70% voter turnout target set by the Election Commission (EC) for the by-election, says PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil.
Fahmi said that the 34% voter turnout figure at 12pm by the EC was low, adding that Pakatan’s election machinery is still working hard to ensure registered voters cast their ballots.
(At 2pm, some time after the press conference, the figure stood at 44%, according to the latest briefing by the Election Commission.)
"Some people are working or aren’t at home. So we can’t monitor them. However, the mood in polling centres is very cheerful and to achieve the 70% target, we need to wait for a second wave of voters," Fahmi said to reporters during a press conference at Pakatan’s Operations Centre in Port Dickson on Saturday (Oct 13).
“The weather is holding. For the first time in a few days it looks good. Better not jinx it,” he said.
There are five state assemblies in the Port Dickson parliamentary constituency, namely Linggi, Chuah, Sri Tanjung, Bagan Pinang, Lukut.
According to Fahmi, statistics gathered by the EC at noon revealed voters turnout at Linggi was at 27%, Bagan Pinang (26%), Lukut (27%), Chuah (26%), Sri Tanjung (25%).
PKR information chief Syed Ibrahim Syed Syed Noh said the voter turnout rate at that point wasn’t enough to ensure a comfortable victory for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“We want our machinery to make sure all efforts are in place to ensure voters are out (to vote),” he added.- Mkini
