PD POLLS | The PAS candidate for the Port Dickson by-election Lieutenant Colonel (R) Mohd Nazari Mokhtar (above) today revealed that he had once met with his rival, PKR president-elect Anwar Ibrahim, to discuss the issue of army veterans welfare in the constituency.
While it was unclear when the meeting had taken place, Nazari said he was taken to Anwar's Bukit Segambut residence by Abdul Hadi Khatab, a fellow veteran said to be an associate of Anwar.
"I was invited by the one who aspired to be PM, he called me. If all of you don't believe me, you can go and see Abdul Hadi Khatab.
“He (Abdul Hadi) took me to the future PM's house. I went to his house in Segambut, to talk about the veterans," he said during a ceramah session at Taman Intan Perdana, Port Dickson.
Nazari, however, lamented that Anwar had not acted upon any of the matters discussed during their supposed meeting.
"Did he do anything? He never did, even though we explained it to him. This is not just rhetoric, all of you can verify. I was also the one who raised the (veterans) issues with Rafizi Ramli.
"All of you can check on YouTube, news articles, I was the one who raised the issue on the need to review (the management of) the Armed Forces Fund Board," he said.
Nazari said his frustrations was further fuelled by Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu's alleged silence, despite the latter (below) being a vocal critic on how the previous BN government failed to protect the veterans.
"Where are your promises now?" said Nazari without mentioning the Amanah president's name.
Nazari said the defence minister should act as a responsible leader and take the necessary action.
'Used to shout'
"Our welfare is under the highest leadership (the king) but who are the ones not doing their duties? Not the generals, because generals are only in charge of operations and their direct subordinates […]
"The one supposed to take care is the one who sits on the 'fifth floor' (minister) so don't just earn a salary (without doing anything)," he said.
"You used to shout at the BN government but now you're sitting at the fifth floor, so fulfil these promises. Don't let them go unfulfilled," he said.
He added that the minister in charge should be more aware of the issues affecting armed forces veterans.
Aside from Anwar and Nazari, the Port Dickson polls on Oct 13 will see five other contenders vying for the parliament seat vacated by PKR's Danyal Balagopal Abdullah.
The five independent candidates are Anwar’s former political aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, former Negeri Sembilan menteri besar Mohd Isa Abdul Samad, Lau Seck Yan, Stevie Chang and Kan Chee Yuen. - Mkini
