PD POLLS | Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s scheduled appearance in Port Dickson will be able to attract outstation voters to come home to vote on Oct 13, PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution said today.
“The people of Port Dickson received a jolt of excitement when Mahathir announced he was coming down to campaign in this by-election.
“We cannot underestimate our persuasion which has been able to reach the outstation voters who have responded really well when Mahathir made the specific request (for them to come back to vote),” Saifuddin said in a press conference at the Pakatan Harapan operations room in Port Dickson Waterfront today.
Mahathir had yesterday announced that he would be coming to Port Dickson next Monday to campaign in the by-election in support of the Pakatan Harapan candidate Anwar Ibrahim.
He said this was to dispel speculations about a rift between him and Anwar, who is expected to succeed him as prime minister.
Saifuddin said he started receiving messages from outstation voters about their intention to come back to vote after Mahathir announced he would campaign here.
He also pointed out that it is rare for Mahathir, even when he was the BN president, to campaign in by-elections.
Mahathir is slated to appear in a mega ceramah in Port Dickson on Monday night at Batu 6 Gateway, Dewan Undangan Negeri Bagan Pinang at 8pm.
The line-up of speakers will also likely include Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, either DAP leaders Lim Kit Siang or Lim Guan Eng, as well as Anwar himself. - Mkini
