Former prime minister Najib Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor have both been charged in court. It is likely that others too will be charged following this.
For sure, the battle is going to be long, difficult and protracted. Right now I think we are just scratching the surface.
How much time will be required to settle all this? How much of the nation’s energy and concentration will be sapped away? Just imagine the amount of resources and manpower used to go after all the criminals associated with 1MDB alone.
How much are we spending a day to upkeep the Equanimity right now? How soon can we resolve all the legal issues and to sell it off?
At the end of the day, we can’t run away from the debits and credits of our efforts.
The problems upon us are unavoidable and real. Imagine a national debt that needs more than four decades to pay off. Imagine the damages done to numerous institutions, which may take years to restore.
Would Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad survive all these problems - or would the problems survive him? Would Pakatan Harapan stay united or would it disintegrate before we get to the bottom of the fiascos we are facing now?
I believe these are valid questions. I don’t think we can ever see meaningful results if there is a regime change or if Harapan self-implodes.
I am sorry, but institutional reforms notwithstanding, I cannot see the independence and professionalism of our institutions such as the AG’s Chambers, the police force, the MACC and others, in carrying out their tasks to the fruitful end if there is a regime change or political realignment occurring in between.
Hence, if Harapan is for the country, it should stay united despite the differences in personalities. Where has the resolve of Harapan before the May 9 election gone?
In this regard, I concur with Zaid Ibrahim’s view - that our PM should go to Port Dickson for an hour or so and perhaps speak for 20 minutes. That will be more than sufficient to send the right message to the nation.
Please do not get me wrong. This is not about Anwar Ibrahim alone. This is about Harapan unity to complete the task it has begun.
When fissures in Harapan emerge, political realignments will most likely follow. Once that happens, I think we can kiss goodbye to solving the numerous problems the nation is facing today. - Mkini
