Yoursay: Only one serious contender in the seven-way PD polls?

YOURSAY | ‘This by-election will go down in history as the PD Circus.’
Vgeorgemy: Independent candidate Mohd Isa Abdul Samad wasn’t serious with his service to Port Dickson while he was in power. He didn’t engage in serious development projects to let the town live up to its potential as a tourist hotspot. Can he do it now if he becomes MP after the by-election? Don’t think so.
Anonymous 287211434594786: Isa, first you need to answer why you kept absolutely silent when your master looted from the nation’s coffers, and maybe then you’d have a leg to stand on. If not, you are little more than an accessory.
Clever Voter: It would be a surprise if Isa loses his deposit, but it is doubtful he will win. This is a man with a tainted image. Everything he has touched has turned to dust, from the state government to Felda. Isa should consider himself lucky that he was well protected by the previous regime.
Making his return to the frontline of politics now isn’t wise, for he is a character riddled with controversy. His support will come from those who benefited from the previous state government and diehard Umno supporters. But I doubt the numbers will be big enough to see him over the finish line in first place.
Anonymous 1689721435778173: All these promises you’re making, Isa, why didn't you carry them out when you were menteri besar of Negeri Sembilan for so many years?
If you were not able to do it then, how can you do it as an independent candidate? If you were to win and then rejoin Umno, it would be a great joke. Maybe better for you to join Bersatu. That's where everyone else from your old party is heading anyway. Bersatu will be like Umno, just without Najib.
Anonymous_1371475682: Isa, like Umno’s Nazri Abdul Aziz, has been keeping relatively quiet, I guess to avoid being investigated. Everyone knows what happen to Felda. But he just has to wait his turn.
Voters in Port Dickson, do yourselves a favour. Don’t vote for him, and send a message that whether local or not, people like him are not needed in Parliament. Isa may have left Umno, but his candidacy is just part of a strategy to stop Pakatan Harapan candidate Anwar Ibrahim’s rise.
Cocomomo: A most corrupt candidate. Survived in the past because he was protected. He may have left Umno, but he stands for exactly what the party represents – corruption.
Will be disappointing if there are still people in Port Dickson who vote for him. Will show that these voters accept corruption and abuse of power. What can he do now? He had every opportunity to help the people if he really wanted to when he was the menteri besar and cabinet minister.
Guuunner: Anwar will win big when this seat-seeker and PAS candidate Mohd Nazari Mokhtar split the votes.
Perak Boleh: Isa’s candidacy is just wayang (for show). For Anwar, Isa contesting means ‘tails I win, heads you lose’.
Anonymous_1393992769: Isa, BN is no longer in power. So no, you are not going to win, because the scales cannot be tipped in your favour. Why would the people of Port Dickson vote you in on your own merits?
Anonymous 2450121480909934: How did he win elections in the past? He has got the charisma of a log.
Anonymous#$&: Isa’s chosen colour for this by-election is purple, but he should have gone with an MACC shade of orange.
Anonymous_f37de788: I admire your courage Lau Seck Yan, at least you are doing some service and the people of Port Dickson already know you. And you’re not asking ridiculous questions like fellow independent candidate Stevie Chan. Although your chances might be slim, but wish you all the best.
Frank Auger: Lau, I don’t know what your motivations are, but you have a real uphill fight. Talk to people about what matters to them. No need to promise mega projects, just get the simple things done and the people of Port Dickson will love you for it.
I really doubt you can beat Anwar, but don’t be discouraged. Most political analysts said BN would win on May 9 and see what happened. Whatever your motivations or who your backers are, make sure you are genuine about serving the people of Port Dickson, that’s all that we ask.
Clever Voter: The first-past-the-post system will work against Lau. All independent candidates will find it challenging to hang on to their deposits. Lau is not a potential giant killer. Like every candidate before her, it’s easy to make big promises.
Port Dickson is not a Phuket and neither is it a Bali. Both these places do have their own social and environmental challenges, but the beaches of Port Dickson need a massive clean-up, and too bad civic-mindedness hasn’t been sown among the people. The sea is equally polluted; you won’t find the pristine waters of Redang Island there.
It is unrealistic to make empty promises on the physical environment which you cannot change. Port Dickson did suffer from overdevelopment at one stage, but to sustain the momentum, everyone, including holiday makers, hoteliers etc., must work together to make it a must-visit resort.
Sleepy: Politics and religion should not mix. Pity that the deposit was not put to better use, like a charity or a temple.
Anonymous_2e7168df: Since when does Buddhism allow its name to be used in politics? Remember how karma works.
KerbauMalaya: No references to religion please. There’s nothing in Buddhism that says anything about elections, so please don’t make any such references.
Anonymous_c9b96c38: Please don’t use religion in politics to signal virtue. It comes off as fake. You are a loner and you must know you cannot implement anything. At least have a list of what you are fighting for, even if it is one voice. Even that you don’t have.
RM15,000 for the publicity, and to get your name and photo on national media. You know it’s not a donation but an advertisement. Independents are welcome to contest, but very few are genuinely into it for the service to the people.
Wsoi: So if nothing is yours, why keep all your money and assets? Just skip one part of the process and donate it to charity straightaway.
On the Other Hand: Don't split the independent vote. Just put your support behind Chan. Lau does not even have a manifesto. Was she put up to better Anwar's chances?
Anonymous_b497ffa7: Rakyat cannot help but regard Lau as an opportunist, with RM15,000 to throw away to get national publicity for about two weeks. She what, woke up one fine morning and decided to make her way down to the nomination centre? What's her public service track record? Is public service in her DNA?
Perhaps she was very encouraged by our new Education Minister Maszlee Malik, catapulted from an academic nobody to a politician, minister, and now university president within a short period of time.
Want to have Maszlee’s trajectory? You have to get the right ‘old man’ to be your sponsor and mentor – Dr Mahathir Mohamad, not your own father.
Anonymous 770241447347646: To stand in an election is your right. It is your money. To try and bring development or change to Port Dickson, you need the support of the state government. You have to be realistic about your position when you stand. Otherwise it will look like an RM15,000 publicity stunt.
I Have An Opinion Like Everyone Else Here Too: RM15,000 for the national spotlight? That’s cheap.
Quigonbond: The fact that Malaysiakini published a piece about her means free publicity already. That's the price she's paying on her deposit.
Awang Top: Hat Yai? No to that. Port Dickson is a place for relaxation and recreation for families.
SelangorKu: Turning Port Dickson into Hat Yai is pure daydreaming. Hat Yai offers sun, sea, surf and sex. What does Port Dickson offer? Even the seafood is not up to scratch.
Anonymous 2450121480909934: This by-election will go down in history books as the ‘PD Circus’. Anwar will have the dubious honour of being the only serious contender in a joke fest. -Mkini
