Shouting match in Dewan Rakyat over Tabung Haji accounts

KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat session today began on a heated note with a shouting match over Tabung Haji (TH) following claims by the opposition that Putrajaya could be manipulating the financial standing of the pilgrims fund board.
The argument began after Annuar Musa (BN-Keterah) asked the government to set up a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) to probe the board’s financial standing.
“The rakyat are concerned and suspicious,” he said during the question and answer session.
He also urged Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mujahid Yusof Rawa to answer the question raised by Anwar Ibrahim (PH-Port Dickson) on the effects and improvements in TH following the change in management and measures taken since May last year.
Mujahid said the people were not concerned about TH.
“Those concerns are the concerns of the opposition. Those who manipulated TH are not from this government,” he added.
He said TH’s operation costs in the first quarter of 2019 had dropped to RM204 million compared to RM262 million during the same period last year.
He also said the government had given TH dividends of 1.25% for the 2018 financial year.
This amounted to a total payout of RM913 million for TH’s 9.3 million depositors, the lowest dividend in the fund’s history.
In 2017, depositors were given a hibah of 4.5%, while those who had not performed the haj were given an additional 1.75% bonus.
But Tajuddin Abdul Rahman (BN-Pasir Salak) then asked about the number of people who had gone for haj this year.
Other BN MPs also joined in, calling Mujahid a weak minister who was slow in his duties.
Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim (BN-Baling) asked if the former TH chairman had in fact stolen any money.
“Are you afraid of setting up an RCI?” he added. “If you are afraid, don’t be a minister.”
