Warisan president Mohd Shafie Apdal today called for patience amidst rumours that Bandau assemblyperson Wetrom Bahanda was leaving Bersatu for his party.
Speaking to reporters in Kinarut, Sabah today, Shafie (above) was non-committal about Wetrom’s alleged plan to join Warisan.
“We will wait for the right time. He has not seen me,” said Shafie. “There are many possibilities.”
Shafie was asked to comment on video clips which allegedly depicted Wetrom seeking a mandate from his supporters to align himself with Warisan.
Malaysiakini's attempt to reach Wetrom for comments was unsuccessful and the veracity of the video clips could not be verified.
If it materialises, Wetrom’s departure will deal a major blow to Sabah Bersatu and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) leader Hajiji Mohd Noor.
Following the 2020 Sabah elections, Hajiji appointed Wetrom as his assistant cabinet minister.
Bandau is a newly created constituency located near Kota Marudu. Wetrom won the seat by securing 60.4 percent of the votes cast.
If Wetrom’s exit from Bersatu was confirmed, the party would be left with 15 seats in the Sabah legislative assembly.
The ruling GRS-BN coalition in Sabah currently has 53 seats in the 79-seat legislative assembly, thereby giving it a very comfortable majority.
Hajiji is not expected to seek the dissolution of the Sabah legislative assembly, which had undergone an election in 2020. - Mkini
