KUALA LUMPUR: It's all over for the host at the Petronas Malaysia Open as Malaysia suffered their worst outing since 2015 when Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi crashed out in the quarter-finals today.
The world No 7's bid of keeping the nation's hopes intact went up in smoke when they went down fighting 14-21, 21-16, 21-17 to world No 1 Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Rian Ardianto at the Axiata Arena.
Being the last Malaysian representatives standing following the elimination of Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei in the mixed doubles earlier in the day, the odds were definitely stacked against them.
Yew Sin-Ee Yi were understandably upset suffering their seventh defeat in 10 meetings to Fajar-Rian.
Yew Sin said their morale remain unaffected despite going into the match with a massive task on their shoulders.
"There was no pressure whatsoever, we went to the court with one and only goal that's to give our best and try to win, which unfortunately did not materialise," said Yew Sin.
"We would like to thank all the fans for their support. It's not just them who wish to see us advance, we wanted it even more than anyone else.
Ee Yi added: "We hope that the fans don't get angry with us. Being the last survivors wasn't a situation that we wanted to be in either."
The last time Malaysia were not represented in the semi-finals of home Open was in the 2015 edition.
