Edu Ministry probes volleyball coach for slapping teen athletes

The Education Ministry has launched an investigation into an incident where a school volleyball coach was seen slapping two of his players during a championship game in Johor two weeks ago.

In a statement, the ministry said they view the incident seriously and would hold a meeting with parents of the secondary school students to get more information.

"We will extend our full cooperation to the police should any report be lodged with the authorities on the incident.

"At the same time, the ministry will also continue with our own disciplinary investigation and should (the coach) be found at fault, appropriate action will be taken," it said.

The incident reportedly occurred during a volleyball championship match held at a school in Kota Tinggi, Johor on Dec 16.

In a live stream by Malaysia Volleyball Association (Mava), a man was seen slapping two teenage girls.

The girls were part of the Malacca volleyball team at the 2022 Malaysia Youth U14 Volleyball Championship.

The assailant, wearing a red jersey that reads “Melaka Volleyball”, was believed to be the girls’ coach.

The incident took place as the Malacca team was trailing behind Johor, at 11 points, with the latter at 16 points.

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh in a tweet yesterday said that she and Education Minister Fadhlina Siddiq were getting more information on the incident. - Mkini
