Ahmad Maslan: Umno polls will still be held before May 19

Delegates at Umno’s annual general assembly (AGM) this year will not be notified of the party’s internal election date, but it will still remain within six months after the general election as set by the Registrar of Societies (RoS).

Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said the RoS had previously approved the party’s constitutional amendment to postpone party elections for six months.

The countdown, Ahmad said, started on the day of the 15th general election (GE15), which took place on Nov 19 last year.

“Of course, there will be a debate from the delegates that touches on the party’s election date.

“The election must be held before May 19 (that is) within six months after GE15.

“The election must be completed before May 19. Therefore, the date announcement of the Umno party polls will not be made during the AGM,” he said.

Ahmad, who is also the deputy finance minister, said this after launching the AGM’s media centre in Kuala Lumpur today.

Umno was supposed to hold party elections last year but they filed an application to RoS for the polls to be postponed.

Look into Umno’s performance in GE15

The move was to enable Umno to focus all its attention on preparing for GE15.

The issue pertaining to party elections has attracted more attention after the move by Umno leaders to cooperate with Pakatan Harapan to form a “unity government”.

The decision drew mixed reactions within Umno, with some openly protesting against the decision made by their president, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Therefore, it is expected that certain leaders may attempt to challenge Zahid for the presidency.

On Dec 27, Zahid hinted that the Umno elections may be brought forward and be held way before May.

The deputy prime minister also said he would leave it to the delegates to decide whether the top two positions should be contested in the party polls this year.

Meanwhile, Ahmad said the issue of Umno’s preparation for the elections in six states will also be discussed in the AGM that commences tonight.

Elaborating on Umno’s focus on the AGM, he explained that Umno will be coming up with a plan to move forward after an abysmal performance in GE15.

“(For instance) What can be learned from GE15 although Umno won seven by-elections, the Johor and Malacca state elections, of which at that time, Zahid was the president.

“Why couldn’t we repeat the success of the by-elections and state elections during GE15?” he said. - Mkini
