Concrete road built at Gua Musang Orang Asli village – Zahid

The Orang Asli Development Department (Jakoa) has built a concrete road behind Kampung Brooke Lama, Pos Brooke, Gua Musang that connects over 500 villagers to surrounding areas and the main road, said Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Zahid (above), who is also rural and regional development minister, said this was in contrast to media reports that the villagers were forced to risk their lives going across a dilapidated iron suspension bridge, including sending their children to the nearest school.

"Following investigations, I was informed that the bridge is not the only way in and out of the area, but Jakoa had built a concrete road behind the village that connects to a tarred road towards Liak and Kuala Rengil Orang Asli villages.

"The concrete road is an accessible main road by car, four-wheel drive and motorcycles," said Zahid in a statement today.

"However, I have requested Kelantan's Development Board and Jakoa to take urgent actions and if there are necessary repair works or upgrading works, they would be carried out for the safety of the people," he said.

On Sunday, Malay-daily Berita Harian reported that the 15-year-old suspension bridge is now unsafe for daily use, with loose parts and holes along its side.

The report quoted Kampung Brook Lama village chief, Rian Bujang, who said the bridge across Sungai Belatop served as the villagers’ main daily access, including for students at SK Brooke. - Mkini
