The Kelantan police have raided Rohingya settlements in 15 locations around Kota Bharu, leading to the detention of nine people since Jan 3.
Kelantan police chief Muhammad Zaki Harun said police arrested 204 Rohingya people living in three areas of operation - in Ketereh, Kok Lanas and Melor.
The operation was conducted following information and complaints received from the public, Zaki said in a statement yesterday.
However, those who hold UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) documents were released as soon as the documentation process was completed.
“In addition, nine individuals are still being held for further investigation under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for not having valid travel documents and for having suspicious documents that require further checks.
“The Kelantan police thank all involved in making the joint operation a success, especially members of the public who are always providing information,” Zaki said.
Following the operation, he added, the police are committed to continuing their monitoring of illegal residents, surveillance and planning suitable measures in all districts of the state.
“Such operations are not only carried out against the Rohingya, but in other settlements that cause unease to the local communities,” Zaki added. - Mkini
