Ditch culture of contentment, PM tells civil servants

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has made himself clear that he would not tolerate the culture of contentment in the government and civil service.

While attending the monthly assembly at the Prime Minister's Department in Putrajaya today, the Tambun MP stressed the need to transform the civil service and government to bring about change to the country.

"The system has been operating steadily since the 1990s, but we must acknowledge our shortcomings apart from accepting our strengths.

"We must govern our own politics, must have a clear direction and be steadfast in bringing changes to restore the dignity of our nation,” he said.

Anwar stated that the new leadership desires to bring transformation and a culture of contentment must be evaded.

"The meaning of the culture of contentment is, (one becomes content) after being appointed as prime minister, minister, director-general and secretary-general.”

Elaborating, the prime minister said that recently, he had called for more aggressive action to be taken to resolve the migrant workforce shortage in the plantation and manufacturing sectors so as to not impede the nation’s economic growth.

"The way I see it, the Immigration Department received it very well," added Anwar.

Anwar also reiterated the need to appoint administrative and diplomatic officers (PTD) to fill the positions of the secretaries-general and private senior secretaries.

He also addressed the issue of public servants being forced to follow instructions given by ministers, despite the orders going against the law.

"That's why the first thing I did was to ask the ministers to cooperate by getting PTD officers to be appointed as senior private secretaries and secretaries-general.

"If they come from other areas, they may not understand (these proper processes). But I am grateful that my advice has been well received," he mentioned.

Anwar also said that his instruction to curb leakages involving government contracts was also well received by civil servants.

"I had spoken about some contracts with expensive commissions but I am not referring to anyone. It is a fact. You simply cannot succeed as a nation with plenty of leakages.

"Some officers were forced to follow these instructions out of fear of being transferred.

"Maybe I will come out with other ideas and also listen to your views too. God willing, please speak out if you face any problems. We want to ensure the country progresses at a faster pace," Anwar said. - Mkini
