PETALING JAYA: The former director-general of education, Amin Senin, has been appointed chairman of the National Education Advisory Council for 2023-2025.
Other members of the council are Prof Fauzan Noordin as deputy chairman, council members Prof Omar Yaakob, NS Mehander Singh, Prof Noor Inayah Ya’akub, Abd Aziz Mahmud, Aminuddin Awang, Rusilawati Salleh and Chee Poh Kiem.
“The excessive level of teacher workload will be the council’s main focus as they will have to examine the issue before coming up with the best solution for the consideration of the (education) minister,” the statement said, according to Bernama.
The ministry said the council would be able to present ideas in steering the country’s education sector towards educational reform, integration and democratisation.
The announcement comes two weeks after former education minister Maszlee Malik had been tipped for a role on the council.
Speculation about his possible posting arose after he wrote on Facebook that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had told him “your sabbatical will soon be over”. Maszlee resigned as education minister in January 2020, about two years after being appointed by the Pakatan Harapan government.
The council was established in November 2010 to advise the education minister and contribute ideas as well as views to the ministry to further improve the direction of the education system.
An MP told FMT on Jan 9 that Maszlee had revived the council in 2018 for a two-year term. The Perikatan Nasional government which came to power in March 2020 did not continue with the council.
Its revival under the current unity government was announced by education minister Fadhlina Sidek in December. - FMT
