Veteran lawyer Gopal Sri Ram is undergoing treatment for a lung infection at the Gleneagles Hospital in Kuala Lumpur.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a source close to him dismissed rumours that the 79-year-old former Federal Court judge had contracted Covid-19.
“It is due to a lung infection. The numerous rumours about Covid-19 are not true.
“We are concerned about his health due to his advanced age,” the source told Malaysiakini.
Malaysiakini, however, is unable to confirm claims that Gopal (above) has been warded in the intensive care unit.
Gopal is leading the prosecution against former premier Najib Abdul Razak in the latter’s ongoing 1MDB corruption trial.
Last December, the Federal Court dismissed Najib’s appeal to disqualify Gopal from prosecuting him.
The former premier’s application was based on former attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali’s Facebook posting in 2020, which alleged that Gopal approached him in January 2018 while he was AG, to ask him to arrest Najib.
Gopal is also the lead prosecutor in the RM1.25 billion solar hybrid project involving Najib’s wife, Rosmah Mansor.
The former judge was appointed to lead the prosecution in these cases by Apandi’s successor, Tommy Thomas in 2018. - Mkini
