SHAH ALAM: An animal rights group lodged a report at the district police headquarters (IPD) here today over the alleged torture of baby long-tailed macaques.
Dr Kartini Farah Abdul Rahim of Hak Asasi Hidupan Liar Malaysia (Hidup) filed the report after receiving a tip-off from animal welfare group Lady Freethinker from the US, and Action for Primates from the UK.
Kartini said she received information from the groups that the perpetrator had recorded the torture of the primates and sold the footage on a Telegram group named “Monkey Haters”.
“It is such a brutal form of torture that should be investigated immediately by the police,” she told reporters after lodging the report.
Lawyer-activist Rajesh Nagerajan, who accompanied Kartini, said they received footage of the torture, which included mutilating, dismembering, hitting the monkeys with blunt objects, burning, boiling and skinning them alive.
“All the while, the baby monkeys are shrieking and screaming. During the process, the perpetrator takes pictures and videos, and posts them on Telegram, like a trailer,” Rajesh said.
If anyone in the Telegram group wanted to watch the full videos, they would have to pay the perpetrator a sum of money.
“This is what you call ‘torture porn’,” he said, adding that the videos were being sold to people around the world through the social media app.
He said the perpetrator should be arrested and charged under the Animal Welfare Act 2015 and Wildlife Conservation Act 2010.
“It should be a lesson to all Malaysians that you cannot go around torturing animals and selling the footage as ‘torture porn’.
“These are sentient beings. One cannot go around torturing and killing them,” he said. - FMT
