Embattled Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor claimed to have received the support of 44 assemblypersons - four more than is needed to form a simple majority in the state legislature.
A photo taken at the steps of his official residence this afternoon, shows Hajiji standing together with assemblypersons from GRS, Pakatan Harapan, and five more from Sabah Umno.
The five are Shahelmey Yahya (Tanjung Keramat), Jasnih Daya (Pantai Dalit), James Ratib (Sugut), Yusuf Yacob (Sindumin), and Mohd Arsad Bistari (Tempasuk) - who yesterday rebelled against Sabah BN’s decision to withdraw support from Hajiji.
Hajiji was cited by Sinar Harian as saying that statutory declarations supporting him had been sent to Governor Juhar Mahiruddin yesterday.
"We have majority support from 44 assemblypersons... this means the current government, which I lead, is still stable and strong and will continue to govern Sabah," he was quoted as saying.
Shahelmy also confirmed that SDs from the five rogue BN assemblypersons were among those that Hajiji sent to the governor.
The Sabah legislature has 79 seats - including six appointed positions whose support is counted towards the majority.
Cancelled press conference
Drama in Sabah began on Thursday when Warisan, which has 19 seats, planned a press conference which was later cancelled, amid talks of a coup against Hajiji.
Then on Friday, Sabah BN - which has 17 seats - withdrew support from the state government, citing a breach of trust whereby the coalition would support Hajiji’s leadership in exchange for positions in the cabinet and government-linked companies.
This is after Hajiji axed Salleh Said Keruak as Qhazanah Sabah chairperson, with further plans to reshuffle the state cabinet.
Hajiji said today that a reshuffle would be made soon.
BN, GRS, and Warisan are all partners in the federal government and signatories of a memorandum of agreement to support Anwar as prime minister.
BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has said that he has a formula for stability in Sabah - which he would discuss with Hajiji and Anwar once the prime minister returns from his trip to Jakarta tomorrow.
This appears to be an attempt to contain the fallout from Sabah BN chief Bung Moktar Radin's decision to withdraw support from the GRS-led government. - Mkini
