PM arrives in Jakarta for first official visit

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has arrived in Jakarta, Indonesia, for his first official visit to the republic since taking office, a move towards strengthening bilateral ties in key areas impacting economic growth.

Anwar and his wife, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, landed at Soekarno Hatta airport at 1.57pm local time (2.57pm Malaysia time) on a special flight this afternoon, where they were met by the official Malaysian delegation that also includes Foreign Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir.

Also present was the Indonesian Ambassador to Malaysia, Hermono.

Upon arrival at the Grand Hyatt Hotel Jakarta, present to greet Anwar were International Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz and officials from the Foreign Ministry as well as the International Trade and Industry Ministry.

During the two-day visit, Anwar is scheduled to witness a series of signings involving agreements between representatives of Malaysian GLCs, private entities, and their Indonesian counterparts, organised by the Malaysian International Trade and Industry Ministry.

The signing ceremony will be taking place at the Grand Hyatt Hotel Jakarta this evening, to be followed by a dinner hosted by the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta for the Malaysian diaspora.

Among the major Malaysian companies on the list include FGV Holdings Bhd and Airod Bhd.

The partnerships involve major players in various key sectors including plantation and infrastructure development for both short-term and longer-term commitments.

Further, a total of 12 Malaysian companies will be submitting letters of intent to participate in the development of Nusantara, Indonesia’s upcoming new capital city in Kalimantan, bordering Sarawak.

Anwar and the Malaysian delegation are scheduled to meet with Indonesian President Joko Widodo at the Presidential Palace in Bogor tomorrow where both leaders are expected to deliver a joint address. - Mkini
