Loke: Free rides for disabled soon, will discuss with relevant parties

The Transport Ministry has held discussions with relevant transport operators so that free public transportation for people with disabilities (PwD) can be implemented as soon as possible.

Its minister Anthony Loke said he has asked Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) and Prasarana Malaysia Berhad, during a post-cabinet meeting, to look at the number of passengers who have PwD cards.

However, Loke (above) said there are financial implications that need to be looked at before any decision can be made.

“It (the initiative) is achievable and manageable within the system.

“We can’t provide free transportation for private e-hailing and taxi, that is beyond us.

“As far as the government’s initiative, this covers KTM and Prasarana network - buses, LRT, and MRT. We can implement that quite soon,” he said after attending the ‘Developing a Madani Nation’ event at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) today.

He said as it is important to make public transport more accessible to the PwD community, elevators and lifts at public transport stations are continuously being improved.

He added that providing free transportation to the PwD community is in line with the government’s ‘Malaysia Madani’ concept as one of its principles is a humanistic economy.

“To help the poor, the needy, and of course, we want to provide a good transportation system for them,” added the Seremban MP.

Missing cargo ship

On the issue of cargo ship MV Dai Cat 06 that was reported missing in Indonesian waters, he said the Marine Department has been instructed to discuss the matter with Wisma Putra.

“I got a report from the Marine Department and the department is fully aware of the incident.

“In fact, they are in touch with the MMEA (Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency).

“I have directed the Marine Department to get help from Wisma Putra to raise the issue with Indonesian authorities,” he explained.

On Jan 9, the Malaysian-registered cargo vessel, carrying 527 pipes valued at RM726,205, was reported missing in Indonesian waters and a police report was lodged by the ship’s agent on the same day.

The ship which was operated by three local and two Indonesian crew left the pier in Kampung Aceh, Perak on Dec 23, 2022, and was supposed to arrive in Kuching, Sarawak, on Dec 31. - Mkini
