Madius urges cabinet to discuss cargo ship missing since Jan 9

Tuaran MP Wilfred Madius Tangau urged the cabinet to discuss the matter of cargo ship MV Dai Cat 06, which has been reported missing since Jan 9, in their weekly meeting tomorrow.

He said this after visiting the family of one of the missing crew members of the ship today in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

“The government must conduct a thorough investigation seeking answers to questions raised by various stakeholders, especially from the families of the missing crew members.

“Questions like why haven’t the shipping agent and the recipient of the goods inside the cargo ship not lodged a police report need answers,” he said in a series of Twitter posts today.

He said he contacted Transport Minister Anthony Loke about the missing cargo vessel and will pass all relevant information and updates to the minister.

The search operation coordinated by Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) was called off on Saturday (Jan 14) after no new clues were found.

Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director-general Mohd Zubil Mat Som said the search operation would be reactivated once Basarnas uncovers new leads on the incident.

Madius said one of the crew members last communicated with his family members on the evening of Jan 1 saying they are still somewhere around Singapore.

He told Malaysiakini the family of the crew member lodged a missing persons report the same day the search operation was called off on Jan 14.

The MV Dai Cat 06 is a Malaysian-registered cargo ship that was carrying 527 pipes, valued at RM726,205, when it was reported missing in Indonesian waters on Jan 9. The ship’s agent also lodged a police report on the same day.

The cargo ship, which was operated by three locals and two Indonesian crew, left Kampung Aceh, Perak on Dec 23, 2022, and was supposed to arrive in Kuching, Sarawak on Dec 31. - Mkini
