In the tradition of every administration having its own brand or slogan, 'Malaysia Madani' appears set to replace the Ismail Sabri Yaakob administration's 'Keluarga Malaysia' tagline.
The new tagline came as part of the theme of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's Budget 2023 dialogue this morning, titled "Developing Malaysia Madani".
National Unity Minister Aaron Ago Dagang later said various programmes would be held nationwide to promote Malaysia Madani, a phrase he said was inspired by Anwar.
"This programme reflects Anwar's desire for a civilised society free to express their views and encourage unity," Aaron was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia.
Madani is a word with Arabic roots that means 'city' and is often associated with the Islamic holy city of Medina.
Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka defines madani as being "developed in terms of thinking, spirituality and materiality".
Another definition is an "effort to shape a society by inculcating good family values".
The term masyarakat madani, meanwhile, is often translated to English as 'civil society'.
Masyarakat madani as a concept was espoused by Anwar since the 1990s in an effort to balance individual liberties and societal stability.
Anwar had also written a book titled "Membangun Negara Madani" (Developing a civil nation) which was published last year, prior to the 15th general election.
A SelangorKini report from last November cited Anwar as saying the book was inspired by his experience in politics, dakwah (spreading faith) and reading thousands of books about nations and visions.
"We talk about elected representatives and prime ministers but what is the plan and major framework of thinking, that is what is discussed in this book.
"Looking at policies, economic resilience, acts... all these require a loving attitude in Malaysia, and a defence of moral values that form the core of Islamic understanding and is also upheld by other faiths," Anwar had said then. - Mkini
