Man appeals for children to be granted citizenship

Chandran Moorthy hopes that the government can grant citizenship to his wife and two children who were born in Malaysia.

PUTRAJAYA: After eight years of fighting to get citizenship for his two children, a father is pleading with the government for help in order to ease the financial burden that he can no longer bear.

Chandran Moorthy, 37, said that since his two children, aged four and eight, are not citizens, they could not enjoy the privileges granted to Malaysians such as subsidised education and healthcare.

He claimed that he had to spend RM10,000 when his second child was born in a government hospital and also paid high fees for his eldest child to go to school.

According to Chandran, the family is faced with this problem as his wife, Kavya Tharshini, 27, was not granted citizenship despite being born in Malaysia.

“I can’t stand this anymore. The children are growing up and so, I am appealing to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to please help my children get their birth certificates,” he told FMT.

Chandran added that he was upset because the home ministry and the national registration department (JPN) had yet to reply on his wife and children’s citizenship applications.

Chandran was among those met by FMT on Friday when civil society group Persatuan Progresif Perikemanusiaan Selangor delivered a memorandum to the prime minister’s office in Putrajaya seeking help for 59 stateless people to gain citizenship. - FMT
