More senators on the way but Cabinet additions unlikely

PETALING JAYA: More senators are likely to be sworn in next month but none of them is expected to be appointed to the Cabinet, according to a Pakatan Harapan source.

The appointments are to fill the quota of senators needed to pass bills in the Dewan Negara.

According to the Parliament website, there are currently 51 senators, meaning another 19 can be appointed.

“At this point, it is unlikely that a new minister will be appointed as no new ministries are being established,” the source told FMT.

“The only vacancy right now is for the post of deputy national unity minister.”

A half-day Dewan Negara sitting has been set for Feb 13, when the first meeting of the second session of the 15th Parliament also takes place.

The swearing-in of new senators will most likely take place then.

Another source, an MP, also said new senators were likely to be appointed soon.

However, he said, PH had not discussed the appointment of new ministers.

“There has been a lot of speculation following the Cabinet retreat on Sunday,” he said. “But that meeting was just to track the progress made by the ministers and to discuss ways to strengthen the unity government.” - FMT
