Mukhriz announces appointments of new Pejuang leaders

Pejuang president Mukhriz Mahathir says these appointments are to ensure the party’s preparedness in facing the upcoming state elections.

PETALING JAYA: Lawyer Rafique Rashid Ali has been appointed Pejuang’s information chief, as part of a slew of new appointments in the party announced by its president Mukhriz Mahathir.

Rafique replaces Ulya Aqamah Husamudin, who remains in the party’s central executive council.

Rafique, who has been in the legal profession for 20 years, had contested for the Shah Alam seat in the 15th general election (GE15) but lost to Pakatan Harapan’s Azli Yusof. He also lost his deposit.

Meanwhile, Fikri Ahmad is the new Pejuang Youth chief, replacing Abu Hafiz Salleh Hudin who had stepped down in December following the party’s trouncing in GE15.

Mukhriz also unveiled new heads for several of Pejuang’s state chapters, including Kamal Abdul Aziz as the federal territories chief.

Kamal takes over from Khairuddin Abu Hassan, who quit the post and central executive council on Dec 20, citing a loss of confidence in Mukhriz’s leadership.

Sheikh Ikhzan Sheikh Salleh, Norizan Ahmad, Nornekman Osman and Muzaimi Ezrin Mukhtar are the new heads of Pejuang’s Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Johor, and Penang chapters, respectively.

“These appointments are to ensure Pejuang’s preparedness in facing the upcoming state elections in six states,” said Mukhriz.

He now leads the party founded by Dr Mahathir Mohamad who quit as Pejuang chairman last month. Mahathir remains a regular member of the party.

Mahathir lost his Langkawi seat in the recent general election in only his second parliamentary election defeat. In 1969, he was defeated by Yusof Rawa of PAS in the Kota Setar constituency.

Mahathir and Mukhriz were among 369 candidates who lost their deposits in the general election. - FMT
