Johor Umno deputy chief Nur Jazlan Mohamed has taken a swipe at several party leaders who aired their dissatisfactions over a motion passed at the Umno general assembly last week for the top two party positions to be uncontested.
Specifically, he singled out Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is also a former prime minister, as well as Johor Umno chief and former Johor menteri besar Hasni Mohammad.
“Even the Umno vice-president who is also PM-9 did not walk the talk. When voting for the motion was carried out, he stood up and supported it, but once out of the hall, he held a press conference to dispute it.
“By right, if he agreed, he could have just sat down quietly, and if he really objected then why did he stand up to support?,” said Nur Jazlan (above) in a statement on Facebook.
Ismail Sabri, during a press conference on Saturday, said the legitimacy of Umno’s move to leave the top two positions in the party uncontested could be referred to the Registrar of Societies (ROS).
According to Nur Jazlan, Ismail Sabri’s statement was made out of unhappiness over being sidelined from the responsibility of managing state Umno chapters under the “adopted minister project” introduced by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Zahid himself is not in charge of the project but he entrusted it to two other Umno vice-presidents, Mohamed Khaled Nordin and Mahdzir Khalid.
“When the Umno president said the names of Khaled and Mahdzir, but not Ismail Sabri, he (Ismail) must accept that fact.
“Maybe the president has lost faith and trust in him because of the many things he did while being PM that went against the (party) directions.
“Maybe that is the price he has to pay for blindly following Muhyiddin Yassin’s lead above the party’s instructions while being Umno’s representative as PM,” said Nur Jazlan.
Clash in Johor Umno
As for Hasni, Nur Jazlan chided the Simpang Renggam MP for speaking about the issue without any prior discussions.
“All this while, he (Hasni) took a silent approach and did not say anything about contests for the president and deputy president’s posts.
“Suddenly, out of the blue, Johor Umno delegate Pandak Ahmad in debating the president’s speech said Johor Umno wants the two positions to be contested.”
Nur Jazlan also said he was never called to meet with Hasni to discuss Johor Umno’s stand on the issue.
Last Sunday, Hasni said it would be unreasonable to prevent any Umno members from contesting the president or deputy president’s post, and that the method used to raise the “no contest” motion was a breach of the party’s constitution.
Meanwhile, Nur Jazlan denied claims that making the two positions uncontested will cause a negative perception of Umno being undemocratic.
“I would like to ask, in 2018, all of the positions were contested including the president’s, but why did Umno still lose in the last GE15?
“Umno has practised democracy after GE14. Why did the people still not support Umno?” he asked.
Nur Jazlan said other parties are also not spared of their own internal turmoil during party elections but public support remains largely unaffected.
In the last Umno election, Zahid was challenged by Khairy Jamaluddin for the president’s post while Annuar Musa went up against Mohamad Hasan for the deputy presidency. - Mkini
