One stone, two birds: Puad takes aims at 'cruel' Thomas and successor

Armed with the acquittal of Shahrir Samad, Umno supreme council member Mohd Puad Zarkashi opened fire at Tommy Thomas and his successor Idrus Harun.

Puad (above) said the case involving the Johor Bahru Umno division chief was the latest example of the former attorney-general’s "wickedness” in ordering "selective prosecutions" during his tenure.

As for Idrus, the Rengit assemblyperson, who wanted the judicial institution reformed, suggested that he go on leave.

Former AG Tommy Thomas

“When will a new AG be appointed? Shahrir’s case proves the magnitude of Thomas’ cruelty.

“The issue is, does the current AG (Idrus) compromise with this deviance (in justice)? Will he just wash his hands off the matter until his contract ends?

“If so, it is best (for him) to go on leave before the contract expires. Justice cannot be delayed.

“Sharir’s case went on for almost three years. There is no compensation for this cruelty. So reform must be expedited,” he added in a Facebook post this afternoon.

Shahrir claims case weak

Last week, the Kuala Lumpur High Court acquitted Sharir, the former Felda chairperson, of a money laundering charge involving the RM1 million he received from Najib Abdul Razak, who also claims to be one of Thomas’ victims.

After the verdict, Shahrir said the case against him was weak but the then AG (Thomas) decided to prosecute him despite his explanations.

“I was sincere in doing my job, to help the poor and the needy.

“I explained why I took the money from Najib. I said all these in my statement (during the investigation),” he added.

Attorney-General Idrus Harun

Thomas was appointed by former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 2018 whereas Idrus took over the position when Muhyiddin Yassin replaced Mahathir in 2020.

Earlier today, Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat disclosed that certain quarters attempted to intimidate the judiciary in political cases heard last year and urged judges not to cave in.

The next high-profile case in the pipeline is Najib’s review of the judicial verdict, which is scheduled to be heard before a new quorum of the Federal Court on Jan 19.

The former premier is serving a 12-year jail term after the apex court in August last year upheld his conviction and sentence in the SRC International corruption case.

Najib last week filed a petition through his lawyers with the UN Human Rights Council Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (UNWGAD).

He is seeking the UN body’s panel of five experts on international justice to rule that the dismissal of his appeal was “unjust, flawed and violated his basic human rights and the Federal Constitution”. - Mkini
