Convenience store franchise FamilyMart Malaysia said that it is still investigating one of its Kuala Lumpur branches for displaying a notice that was construed to be discriminatory against people with disabilities (PWDs).
A photo of the notice was uploaded on Twitter on Jan 17 read: “Please throw away after eating, only OKU (PWDs) don’t throw after eating”.
This generated an internet uproar as many believed the notice blamed PWDs for not cleaning up after themselves.
A representative from FamilyMart told Malaysiakini today that the notice was immediately removed after the situation was brought to the company’s attention.
He said FamilyMart was deeply apologetic about this and has launched an investigation into the matter.
“Please allow us to extend our apology for this. This is not acceptable for FamilyMart, and please know that immediate removal is done.
“An investigation is ongoing and stern action will be taken to ensure this does not happen again.
“We would like to take this opportunity to reiterate that FamilyMart does not condone any discriminatory language and practices. We once again, apologise for this,” he added. - Mkini
