After being sacked from PKR, former secretary of the PKR veterans’ group Otai Reformis 1998 Abdul Razak Ismail is still in high spirits and revealed that he has big plans for the year.
Speaking to Malaysiakini, Razak, who is the Green Party’s pro-tem secretary-general, said he has registered the new party with the Registrar of Societies (ROS) and is currently awaiting approval.
If the ROS approves the party’s application in time before the Selangor state election is called, he hopes to contest one of the state seats in the upcoming polls.
“If the approval is on time, we (Green Party) will be contesting in the Selangor state election where the Bukit Cherakah and Bukit Lagong forest reserves are located.
“Right now, we are focusing on environmental issues, defending the forest reserves, especially in Selangor as I see that the state government is ‘very very keen’ to ‘touch’ the forest reserves.
“Records from the Selangor State Forestry Department show there are 76 locations of forest reserves all over the state with a total area of 250,000 hectares,” he said.
Razak (above) was stripped of his membership by PKR’s central leadership council effective Jan 7.
He said he was notified of the dismissal via an email sent to him by PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail on Friday (Jan 13).
Saifuddin Nasution said Razak was dismissed from the veterans’ group as the latter is currently holding the position of the pro-tem secretary-general of the Green Party.
Another reason for Razak’s dismissal, Saifuddin Nasution said, is due to the former’s actions that violated the code of ethics for members clause 10.2.1 “conducting sabotage activities to the party’s decision and its leadership.”
“With this dismissal, you are automatically sacked from all positions held in the party and cannot make any statements in the name of the party.
“You can, however, submit an appeal to the central leadership council for their consideration within 14 days from the date of this notice,” Saifuddin Nasution said in the letter.
Continuing the fight
Razak said he formed the Green Party with a clear agenda focused on protecting the environment and defending the forest reserves.
He claims the forest reserves have been made a “focal point” by the state government in the past several years for development activities, logging, or opened for the purpose of developing into “forest farms”.
He also stressed that PKR acted too harshly by sacking old-timer reformists such as former party vice-president Tian Chua and himself.
“This comes just after they captured Putrajaya. Most of them are considered new when we fought during the Reformasi era in 1998.
“I’m just an ordinary Otai Reformis member now. I told them since Anwar (Ibrahim) is already the 10th prime minister, the Otai Reformis’ struggle for Anwar is over.
“I don’t think Pakatan Harapan/PKR can protect the forest during this five-year tenure as the ruling government because I don’t see any of them as environmentalists,” he said. - Mkini
