PETALING JAYA: Malaysian doubles champions Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik stormed into the finals of the Indian Open badminton championship in New Delhi by defeating world number one pair Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Adrianto 21-11, 15-21, 21-16.

The duo, ranked sixth internationally, won the first game of the semi-final with ease but lost the second. They came back strong in the third game.

They will play either China’s world No 11 Liang Weikeng-Wang Chang or South Korea’s world No 18 Kang Min-hyuk-Seo-Seung-jae for the title on Sunday.

For Aaron and Wooi Yik, today’s win was sweet revenge after having lost to the Indonesian pair three times in a row before this, namely at last year’s Malaysian Masters, and the Thailand and Swiss Opens.

The head-to-head score between the two pairs of arch rivals is 4-3, in favour of the Malaysians.

At last week’s Malaysian Open, the Aaron-Wooi Yik pair was bundled out in the second round.

Meanwhile, world No 8 Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan failed to make it a double joy for Malaysia when they were beaten by Japan’s world No 2 pair of Nami Matsuyama-Chiharu Shida 14-21, 16-21 in the women’s doubles. - FMT
