Speed limit on federal roads to be reduced by 10kmh starting tomorrow

The speed limit on federal roads across the country will be reduced by 10km per hour (kmh) effective from Jan 18 to 27 in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration, said Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi.

This means that the speed limit for such roads will be lowered from 90kmh to 80 kmh during the period.

According to a report by Astro Awani, Alexander said that the temporary speed limit reduction is for safety reasons in line with the monitoring measures taken by the government to reduce road accidents that often occur during the festive season.

"The Works Ministry is also working with the Transport Ministry and the police to take steps to hold a continuous road monitoring programme," he said in Dengkil today.

He said this at the launching ceremony of the Road Safety Campaign and Integrated Ops. Also present was Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

The Integrated Ops and National Road Safety Campaign starts from Jan 18 and runs through Jan 28.

Apart from the Works and Transport Ministries, the other agencies participating in the campaign are the Road Transport Department, Public Works Department (JKR), Malaysian Highway Authority and PLUS Malaysia.

Alexander said that JKR will constantly monitor the locations of identified 'blackspots' to ensure the comfort and safety of road users.

He said that as many as 76 frequent accident locations had been identified.

He added that a total of 53 'blackspots' locations involving federal roads throughout the country were also repaired last year at the cost of RM17.2 million.

"The improvements implemented are low-cost and high-impact solutions.

"In areas where accidents occur or are at risk of occurring due to dark roads, as many as 40 locations have been improved with the installation of street lights at a cost of RM4.7 million.

"This programme will continue to be implemented in 2023 so that road safety can be improved," he said. - Mkini
