Umno should establish an Ulama Council as part of its renewal to face the new political scenario, its president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.
Delivering his policy speech at the Umno general assembly today, Zahid said there must be cooperation between ulama (religious leaders) and umara (leaders).
"We must approach religious scholars whom I believe are willing to work with us.
"We must realise the reform proposal discussed some time ago; the Umno Ulama Council should be established soon," he said.
Meanwhile, Zahid, who is also the deputy prime minister, said a forensic audit should be carried out against the previous administration to probe for leakages.
"The cause of the leakages must be investigated, and the enforcement agencies must act (against them). This is the people's aspiration, and it is the government's responsibility to ensure it is fulfilled.
"The arrest made in connection with the probe against alleged misappropriation of funds amounting to over RM90 billion is a good start. It's a sign of the government's commitment to bring those responsible (for the corruption) to book."
Zahid further gave assurance that Umno would not interfere in the enforcement of the law and that the relevant agencies would be tasked to do it. - Mkini
