Former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob is undecided on whether to continue to defend his current position as Umno vice-president.
However, he confirmed that he will defend his position as Bera Umno's division leader.
“It is certain that I will defend (my position as) Bera Umno division leader. (As for vice-president), it is still early (to decide).
“I don’t know yet. I will have to discuss this with the people of Bera first.
“The supreme council has not decided on when the election for the division level will be held yet, so we wait,” said the Bera MP during a press conference after officiating the natural disaster operations control centre of the Malaysian Civil Defense Force (APM) in Bera, Pahang.
He explained that based on the motion approved during last weekend’s Umno general assembly, only vice-president positions and below would be contested.
The motion, proposed by Negeri Sembilan delegate Mohd Shukri Samsudin, was to not have the party’s top two positions open for contest in its upcoming election.
Asked if the decision was final, Ismail Sabri explained that any decision made at the Umno general assembly could be challenged.
“That was as agreed upon during the general assembly, (the position of) president and deputy president will not be contested, but the final decision can still be determined by the Registrar of Societies (ROS)," he added.
Previously, Ismail Sabri said there were party members who think the decision could have been made in a different manner, and that the matter can be referred to the ROS to get confirmation regarding the status of the motion.
However, he added that he would not take the matter to the ROS or send a notice of objection, explaining he was merely stating two different views. - Mkini
