ALOR GAJAH: The father of one of the two teenage students who were slapped by a volleyball coach says he has forgiven the teacher and hopes no disciplinary action will be taken on him.
The 50-year-old does not think that the incident will leave any psychological impact on his daughter, despite widespread criticism of the coach’s behaviour.
He said the coach’s conduct was a tacit encouragement for his daughter to do better and he did not think that it was intended to cause harm.
“I request the youth and sports ministry and education ministry not to take action since we have forgiven the sports teacher.
“As for netizens, we hope they will stop all criticism against the teacher because I don’t think it’s a serious (issue) and there are no (lasting) injuries,” he told reporters in Kampung Melekek.
In a video clip which has gone viral on social media, the coach is seen slapping the two girls at the 2022 Malaysia Youth U14 Volleyball Championship in Johor recently.
His action drew the ire of many, including youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh who said it was wrong to act in such a manner.
The girl’s father said he never thought the incident would go viral on social media and catch the attention of the Malaysia Volleyball Association who had since suspended the coach.
The girl’s family has known the coach for more than five years and hopes that he will be retained based on his ability and dedication to turn the teenagers into champions.
“We hope the parties involved can give the coach a chance by taking into account his service and the dedication he has poured into volleyball. I believe the episode is nothing more than ‘a jolt for people to wake up from slumber (complacency)’, to raise the spirit (of the girls),” he said.
Yesterday, the coach met with the students’ parents and apologised for his action. - FMT
