PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim wants the Education Ministry (MoE) to prioritise the training of teachers.

The ministry said in a statement this was what the prime minister said when chairing a meeting with the MoE higher managemet today.

"Teachers are the agents of change who can alter the education ecosystem in schools," the statement quoted Anwar as saying.

It said the prime minister also touched on the Adopted School initiative involving strategic corporate partners; digital education; and, artificial intelligence.

In the meeting that lasted more than an hour, Anwar was briefed on the education reform agenda which is currently being carried out at all levels.

He was also briefed on the new education development plan and the 2027 School Curriculum.

"The meeting was held to give focus to various major issues, reforms and needs which have to be carried out immediately as far as education is concerned.

"MoE is responsible for preparing a trained and professional workforce, through education, to meet the country's needs," it said.

The ministry said Anwar also wants MoE to ensure that all schoolchildren master Bahasa Melayu, while also empowering English.

"The main emphasis is on the competency of teachers and the cultural integration of Bahasa Melayu and English at every level."

The ministry said there was also a need to increase enrolment in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects at all types of schools.

"STEM enrolment in boarding schools is now at 98 per cent. The focus now will be on other types of schools, including religious schools." - NST
