PARLIAMENT | Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin has stressed that the recent political turmoil in Perlis was resolved in accordance with constitutional provisions.
The Pagoh MP said the political issues in Perlis, including the fall of menteri besar Shukri Ramli and the dispute between Bersatu and PAS, were fully settled through the role of the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, in line with the Constitution.
“So whatever the problems were, they have already been resolved,” he said during the debate on the royal address in the Dewan Rakyat today.
Earlier, RSN Rayer (Harapan–Jelutong) interjected and asked Muhyiddin (above) whether he agreed that political stability enables Malaysia to face various challenges, including matters related to reciprocal agreements with the United States, compared to political uncertainty such as that seen in Perlis.
Muhyiddin, who is also a former prime minister, said that although there are views linking national stability with such agreements, attempts to raise the Perlis issue were, in his view, baseless and driven by ill intent.
“It’s not very relevant to what we are discussing. It’s deliberately raised to show intentions and motives that I think are not good,” he said.

According to him, the resolution of the problems that had affected Perikatan Nasional also proved that Perlis remains a sovereign and stable state.
“Perlis is not in ruin. Perlis is a sovereign state and we have resolved it wisely,” he said.
Forced out
Shukri, who is also a PAS central committee member, had earlier resigned as menteri besar.
The former PAS Perlis menteri besar later aligned with Bersatu.
He was forced to step down after failing to secure the support of the majority of state assemblypersons.
The resignation followed eight statutory declarations (SDs) submitted by Perlis assemblypersons, three of which were signed by Saad Seman (Chuping), Fakhrul Anwar Ismail (Bintong) and Ridzuan Hashim (Guar Sanji).

PAS subsequently terminated the memberships of the three assemblypersons. The party viewed the episode - which resulted in a Bersatu assemblyperson becoming menteri besar - as a betrayal.
The incident also strained ties between PAS and Bersatu, leading to calls for Muhyiddin to step down as PN chairperson.
PAS later asserted that it would take over the coalition's leadership from Bersatu. - Mkini
