PARLIAMENT | Syahredzan Johan reaffirmed a personal stance to reject invitations to events hosted by the United States embassy in Kuala Lumpur as a sign of protest against global actions sanctioned by Donald Trump.
In his debate of the royal address today, Syahredzan (Pakatan Harapan-Bangi) cited a series of separate actions by the US president.
They included the recent establishment of a Board of Peace for Gaza, promoted as a “key element” of the second phase of a plan to end the war in the Palestinian territory.
“Initially, the Board of Peace was meant to rebuild the Gaza territory, but now it appears to be taking a form similar to the United Nations.
“What is most strange and unacceptable is that to become a permanent member, one must pay US$ 1 billion,” said Syahredzan.
On Jan 23, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia would find it difficult to express early support for the proposed Board of Peace without clear and firm guarantees regarding the fate of the people of Palestine, especially in Gaza.
Bernama quoted Anwar as saying that Malaysia has given its views on the matter and continues to follow related developments, particularly how there has yet to be a complete halt to the brutal and barbaric attacks by the Israeli regime, and the restoration of humanitarian aid.
The West and US have failed
Commenting further, Syahredzan said, “Therefore, I think we should not feel disappointed if we are not invited to join the Board of Peace.”
“I support what the prime minister said previously: Before establishing any board or body and talking about peace, the attacks on Gaza must stop first.
“We cannot have peace as long as Israel continues attacking Gaza and continues to disregard the ceasefire that has already been agreed upon. This is a farce!” he stressed.
“There are still some among our people who admire the US and look to the West, but it is clear that the West and the US have failed.
“That is why I have personally taken the position that whenever I receive invitations from their embassy, I will decline,” he said.
Syahredzan added that while there may be ministers and MPs who need to continue engagements with the US through its embassy here, he is free to decline such invitations as an ordinary backbencher.
“At the very least, I hold to the principle that as long as they behave like this, I cannot engage or meet with them,” he said, stressing that Malaysia must continue to play its role on the international stage as a voice of truth. - Mkini
