Speedmart 99, KK Mart, Chinese-owned convenient chains under boycott radar after Mydin-DAP fallout

RIGHTIST groups have rallied Muslims to “only spend” their Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) aid at Mydin after a pro-Madani keyboard warrior called for a boycott of the wholesale & retail chain for an alleged slander by its owner against Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong.

This came about after social media influencer Raja Mohd Shahrim demanded an apology from Mydin Mohamed Holdings Bhd managing director Datuk Ameer Ali Mydin for accusing Khoo of unfairly portraying the hypermarket chain as a “the sole beneficiary” of the SARA aid programme.

Coming on the backdrop of Malaysians aged 18 and above getting a second round of RM100 SARA aid on Feb 9, the Melaka DAP chairman had remarked in the Dewan Rakyat on Jan 20 that the Mydin owner was “so happy till he can dance here and there on TikTok because his business is booming”.

In his defence, Khoo has furnished his ‘script’ which stated that he did also mention Speedmart 99 alongside other major supermarkets as beneficiaries.

But Raja Mohd Shahrim insisted that unless Ameer makes an open apology for he had painted Khoo as having fanned racial sentiment, he would “BOYCOT MYDIN thereafter and use my social media power so that netizens are aware of the truth”.

Following his championing Khoo’s ‘innocence’ by mooting a boycott of Mydin, Raja Mohd Shahrim was not only slammed as a “DAP bootlicker” but also triggered the furore of rightist groups and individuals who not only rallied behind Mydin but accused DAP of masterminding the destruction of Malay/Muslim-owned businesses.

As the keyboard warrior faces massive backlash from rightists, calls to boycott Chinese-owned convenient store chains reverberated across cyberspace.

“There is a DAP Melaka bootlicker who wants to destroy Mydin or Muslim traders. We need to support Muslim and Bumiputra traders to stay strong,” fumed Fauzi Pojie II in a Facebook post.

They used to mess up GISBH (Al-Arqam-owned international business conglomerate GISB Holdings Sdn Bhd). Now they want to ruin Mydin.

“They’re getting red-eyed watching Muslims become billionaires.

“BOYCOTT 99 Speedmart, KK Mart, 7 Eleven, Mr DIY, TF Value-Mart, HERO Supermarket, DAP grocery store, DAP tire store, All DAP stores.

Added another rightist who is possibly unaware of Khoo’s clarification:

“99 Speedmart and Lotus’s are the biggest beneficiaries of MySARA. But Mydin is also the one under attack by DAP. Boycott, stop shopping at 99 no matter how convenient.”
