BARISAN Nasional (BN) has emerged victorious in both the Kinabatangan parliamentary by-election and the Lamag state assembly seat, according to unofficial results announced shortly after polling closed on Saturday (Jan 24).
UMNO Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh declared the wins on his Facebook page, hailing the results as a strong show of support for BN.
In the Kinabatangan parliamentary contest, BN candidate Mohd Naim Kurniawan Moktar secured a commanding lead with a majority of 12,777 votes, as reported by Bernama based on unofficial tallies.
This margin reflects a dominant performance in the constituency, which had 48,526 registered voters. Warisan’s Datuk Saddi Abdul Rahman received 1,523 votes, while independent candidate Goldam Hamid garnered 349 votes.
The seat saw steady voter turnout throughout the day, with polling stations operating from 7.30am to 5.30pm across 36 centres and 117 streams. Early unofficial counts showed BN taking an early lead, which widened as more results came in.
In the Lamag state seat – a straight fight between BN and Warisan – BN’s Mohd Ismail Ayob @ Miha is leading with a majority of 538 votes over Warisan’s Mazliwati Abdul Malik Chua.
The constituency had 13,703 eligible voters, and BN’s retention here reinforces the coalition’s hold in the area. At the time of writing, we did not get the unofficial final tally.
The by-elections were triggered by the death of Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, a prominent Sabah politician, leaving both seats vacant and prompting a keenly watched contest in the region.
Dr Akmal’s announcement underscored BN’s effective campaign machinery, backed by the unity government in Sabah.
Official results from the Election Commission are expected soon, but the unofficial tallies point to a clear mandate for BN in these twin polls. This double victory strengthens BN’s position in Sabah politics amid ongoing dynamics within the state’s coalition landscape. — Focus Malayia
