UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan has urged the party to conduct quarterly surveys to track Malay voter sentiment, particularly attitudes toward UMNO’s alliance with DAP.
In an interview with Free Malaysia Today (FMT) he said many Malays still struggle to accept the partnership despite supporting the unity government, and warned that unresolved perceptions could hurt UMNO before the next general election.
“Malays still despise DAP but have no issue with the unity government, so it is not impossible for government initiatives to lessen that animosity.
“But if Malays still reject UMNO because of its alliance with DAP, then the party must make an important decision before the next general election,” he told FMT.
Ahmad argued that changing political dynamics make voter optics increasingly important. He cited UMNO’s poor performance in the recent Sabah state election as evidence of failing to read grassroots mood.
The party won only four seats, revealing a gap between Sabah’s 622,637 UMNO members and 144,584 votes. — Focus Malaysia
