KUALA LUMPUR: Heavy rain and thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds are forecast to affect several areas in Kelantan, Terengganu, Sabah, and Sarawak until 10pm tonight.

In a statement, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said the wet weather in Kelantan is expected to impact Jeli and Kuala Krai, while in Terengganu it will affect Besut, Setiu, Kuala Nerus, and Hulu Terengganu.

In Sarawak, the areas likely to be hit include Kuching, Betong, Sarikei, and Bintulu (Tatau and Sebauh).

"In Sabah, heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected in Sandakan, including Telupid and Beluran," it added.

According to MetMalaysia, warnings are issued when thunderstorms with rainfall exceeding 20 millimetres per hour are imminent or expected to persist for more than an hour.

"A thunderstorm warning is a short-term alert, valid for a period of no more than six hours for each issuance," it said. - NST
