PAS nominates three names for PN chairperson – source

PAS has put forward three names as candidates to lead Perikatan Nasional to replace Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin, who resigned as the coalition’s chairperson on Jan 1.

According to a PAS source, the three are PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, and Kedah Menteri Besar Sanusi Nor.

However, the source explained that the final decision rests with PAS central leadership, while Sanusi has openly declined to be nominated as PN chairperson.

“(PAS president) Tuan Guru (Abdul Hadi Awang) has explained on this matter. He gave his reasons for not wanting to lead PN.

“Sanusi has also declined to be chosen as PN chairperson, and Tuan Ibrahim has likewise expressed his intention not to lead PN.

“So far, only Samsuri may be nominated by PAS as PN chairperson,” the source told Malaysiakini.

Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar

Yesterday, Hadi stressed that the party remains set to lead PN following Muhyiddin’s resignation as coalition chairperson earlier this month.

He said a PAS muktamar (annual assembly) resolution had previously approved a motion for PAS to lead PN.

“That is the PAS muktamar resolution for (PAS) to become (PN) chairperson,” he told reporters after delivering a dhuha (morning) lecture at Rusila Mosque in Marang yesterday.

Asked about Muhyiddin’s position, as he is still PN chairperson for now, Hadi said no new decision has been made so far, while reiterating that PAS already has candidates for the post.

Muhyiddin to remain at PN’s helm?

In a related development, Hadi, who is also the Marang MP, said PAS has yet to receive an official invitation to a PN meeting to discuss the appointment of a new chairperson.

Another source said there are still offers from Bersatu to retain Muhyiddin as PN chairperson.

Malaysiakini has contacted several PAS leaders for further confirmation on the matter, but they declined to comment.

At the same time, a Bersatu source acknowledged that the party still hopes Muhyiddin will be given the opportunity to continue leading PN.

He said Muhyiddin’s leadership as prime minister previously was seen as proven and could be an added value in attracting public support.

Although declining to provide further details, the source said discussions between Bersatu and PAS leaders had occurred in several meetings.

“Wait, there will be some changes coming. Discussions have been held, and they are positive,” the source told Malaysiakini. - Mkini
